Federal Government Picks up Slack | Ontario Wynne-ded | Canadian Honey Bee Health – Canada News Centre

July 15, 2014 – Edmonton, Alberta – Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada

Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz today announced an investment of $1 million to the Beekeepers Commission of Alberta to initiate a four-year-nation-wide surveillance project to document the health profile of honey bee colonies in Canada.

The aim of the project is to record the nature, extent and prevalence of diseases, pest organisms and chemical residues in Canadian apiaries. To date, surveillance of this nature has been done at the regional level, and the sector is seeking to expand coordination and identify commonalities nationally on the health of bees. This baseline information is essential in regional colony health management practices and will identify exotic organisms before they establish themselves within Canadian bee populations. The data gathered will also support Canada's position for international trade of honey bee stock.

This project builds on the work that Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's researchers, in partnership with the Canadian Honey Council, the Canadian Association of Professional Apiculturists and their international counterparts, have undertaken in recent years to address emerging bee health issues.

Alberta won’t follow Ontario in banning bee-killing pesticide | Sun News

EDMONTON – Alberta won't follow Ontario's move to restrict the use of a pesticide linked to bee deaths.

On Monday, Ontario's Liberal government confirmed that it is seeking to limit the use of neonicotinoids, also known as neonics, a type of pesticide that scientists say is linked to colony collapse disorder in bees.

In June, a panel of 50 scientists comprising the Task Force on Systemic Pesticides — affiliated with the International Union for Conservation of Nature — said the pesticide disorients bees, interfering with their homing abilities.

"The evidence is very clear. We are witnessing a threat to the productivity of our natural and farmed environment equivalent to that posed by organophosphates or DDT," said Dr Jean-Marc Bonmatin of the National Centre for Scientific Research in France, one of the lead authors of the study.

Finally, while the Ontario Beekeepers Association has been allying itself with mindless environmental groups it forgot about the members it is supposed to represent. As such, the Independent Commercial Beekeepers has now formed in ON and is well on it’s way to becoming the true voice of beekeepers in that province.
