Summerside Cosmetic Pesticide Ban Defeated
Mayor Bill Martin Disappointed By Pesticide Vote
November 17th, 2015
City Of Summerside, Province Of Prince Edward Island ( PEI )
Selected And Adapted Excerpts
Summerside is the second largest city in the province of Prince Edward Island with a population of almost 15,000.
A motion before Summerside council to prohibit the use of some lawn care chemicals was defeated Monday night, and the process for a new [ anti-pesticide ] by-law in the P.E.I. city was started.
Summerside Mayor Bill Martin campaigned on a [ so-called ] cosmetic pesticide prohibition. (CBC)
The debate went on for more than an hour before the motion was voted down.
But another motion was put on the floor and passed. It will see the development of a public education campaign around alternative products, and following that campaign a new bylaw.
Mayor Bill Martin was disappointed. A big part of his election campaign was imposing some kind of prohibition.
“Decisions are made by council, you need to respect that. True democracy recognizes that you’re not always going to get your way,” said Martin.
“I supported and continue to support a ban on cosmetic pesticides. I think the way the process has unfolded and is unfolding will likely see that happen, but probably a year later than I would have liked to have seen it.”
In the original motion the prohibition would have come into effect in March 2016.
In the new plan the educational component will take most of next year and a will have a bylaw drafted by September that could go into effect by March 2017.

NORAHG CONGRATULATES SUMMERSIDE FOR JOINING THE CONTINENTAL TRENDS AGAINST PESTICIDE BANS ― PROHIBITION WOULD HAVE INFLICTED CATASTROPHIC CARNAGE & RUINATION !
The government officials of Summerside, Prince Edward Island, made THE RIGHT CHOICE, and deserve CONGRATULATION. In jurisdictions outside of Summerside, anti-pesticide prohibition has inflicted catastrophic carnage for businesses operating in the professional lawn care industry. An overwhelming number of these businesses disappear into oblivion with 2 or 3 years after prohibition. Thousands of workers in the professional lawn care industry have become unemployed. http://wp.me/P1jq40-43B Moreover, lawns located in prohibition neighborhoods have been ruined by weeds and insects, and have become dangerous and pest-infested garbage dumps. http://wp.me/P1jq40-44g http://wp.me/P1jq40-4z3 With prohibition, dandelions inevitable become the dominant ground cover in the urban landscape since it is IMPOSSIBLE for home-owners or professionals to keep their properties safe and attractive by using organic pesticide-free maintenance products & practices that are stunningly expensive and does not work. http://wp.me/P1jq40-445 Besides, anti-pesticide prohibition has become a farce. Residents are obtaining products either from other provinces, or from across the border in the United States, or through the internet. http://wp.me/p1jq40-4mS It is not illegal to own or possess these products, only to apply them. Dozens of jurisdictions have already stopped or rescinded or limited or opposed anti-pesticide prohibition, or granted professional lawn care businesses with an exception status. Summerside has joined the continental trend against prohibition. http://wp.me/P1jq40-1JO http://wp.me/p1jq40-6h1 For the whole truth regarding prohibition inflicting catastrophic carnage, go to … http://wp.me/P1jq40-26P WILLIAM H GATHERCOLE AND NORAH G http://pesticidetruths.com/
Only on PEI
It has become too easy to buy things to kill weeds and pests without putting in much effort. What happen to using boiling water on weeds ? Cheaper than Roundup and safer for children and pets. [ ?!?! ]
Norah G Fon
TO ONLY ON PEI — CHILDREN ARE SAFE WITH PESTICIDES ! Pest control products represent NO threat to children since they are scientifically-safe and will cause NO harm. There is no need for screeching-monkeys like yourself to recklessly conspire to impose arbitrary prohibition against pest control products used in the urban landscape. Leading scientific experts, like Dr Katherine von Stackelberg, say they would NOT hesitate to let their children play on a lawn where lawn care products have been used as long as the products were applied according to label directions. http://tinyurl.com/mw2fu7u According to another leading expert, Dr James S Bus, there is NO evidence that common lawn herbicides like 2,4-D cause cancer or any health problems in children. Dr Bus has also stated that there is NO regulatory agency in the world that regards pest control products like 2,4-D as a threat to children’s health. http://wp.me/p1jq40-7W0 According to yet another leading expert, Mr William Jordan, Deputy Director, Office of Pesticide Programs, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency ( EPA ), parents DO NOT need to worry as long as a pest control product is used correctly. The EPA has spent a lot of time looking at products like 2,4-D, and has concluded that it is safe for kids. http://tinyurl.com/pe6x3h9 Allegations by screeching-monkeys like yourself about the imaginary danger to children are totally false, and are untrue mis-representations merely designed to alarm and enrage the public.
Shame on our government ( again ). The studies have already been done. All of Ontario and all of Quebec have put a law in place. The simple changes needed are easily available. There are many ways to detoxify the pesticide sprays used. Why all the decision-making delays ? [ ?!?! ]
Norah G Fon
TO JENYBEE — EPA, Health Canada, and other science-based national regulatory agencies have clearly demonstrated that pest control products used in the Urban Landscape are LESS TOXIC THAN Aspirin, baking soda, caffeine, cannabis, nicotine, table salt, and Tylenol. Additionally, these products are NO MORE TOXIC THAN ethanol ( an edible beverage constituent in beer, wine, and other intoxicating beverages ), mouthwash ( Listerine ), and Vitamin C. These pest control products are scientifically-safe, practically non-toxic, will cause NO harm, will NOT cause cancer, and will NOT cause irreversible damage if consumed orally. The probable lethal dose for a person ingesting the concentrated form of many of these products is ONE LITRE, the volume of an entire milk carton. By comparison, drinking SIX LITRES of water, a fluid that is seemingly harmless, can lead to water poisoning or dilutional hyponatremia, which is a potentially fatal disturbance in brain functions. In essence, water is only FIVE TIMES SAFER than many of these products. Pest control products are SCIENTIFICALLY-SAFE, and will NOT CAUSE HARM TO PEOPLE, ANIMALS, OR THE ENVIRONMENT. http://wp.me/p1jq40-7HR http://wp.me/P1jq40-2ha http://wp.me/p1jq40-5ni
Just another stall tactic. I’m ashamed of our gov’t in this province. Are they not there to serve the people ? The people want a ban. Where is the difficulty ? Effin, politicians not doing their job again. [ ?!?! ]

TO LAPTOP LADY — WE KNOW THE MAJORITY DO NO WANT PROHIBITION BECAUSE OF LEGITIMATE POLLS. These polls clearly demonstrate that the public does not want this #@!!% ban nonsense. In 2011, a BC poll conducted by Canadian Consumer Specialty Products Association ( CCSPA ) showed that the vast majority of residents are opposed to a proposed prohibition against the use conventional pest control products, and they actually favour the continued use of these products around their homes and in public green spaces. http://wp.me/P1jq40-2bo In 2011, an Ontario poll showed that the public rejects pesticide bans, and more than half of Ontario residents believed that the provincial government did not do the right thing by imposing an arbitrary pesticide ban. Ontario residents would rather have the ban scrapped or modified. http://wp.me/P1jq40-3kB In February 2013, Canadian Association Of Agri-Retailers ( CAAR ) said there is questionable public support for prohibition against the use of pest control products. http://wp.me/p1jq40-6tT In February 2013, a poll conducted by Winnipeg Free Press showed that 60 per cent of the public were opposed to prohibition. http://wp.me/p1jq40-6ii In fall 2012, professional lawn care businesses and clients sent to Manitoba government officials the results of a petition with 2,500 post-cards opposing a proposed prohibition, which was overwhelming opposition to anti-pesticide activists who had a mere 1,000 signatures supporting prohibition, with most signatures originating from outside Manitoba. http://wp.me/p1jq40-5fL
Don’t understand why they couldn’t pass a ban AND start an education program at the same time.
How discouraging. It’s very apparent that some people really don’t care about the environment or the health of their families, especially their children. This shows lack of foresight and lack of intelligence. This mindset about having the perfect lawn is ridiculous. We don’t use pesticides of any kind on our property and we don’t water our lawn. We have Hosta in flower beds which doesn’t need watering. Mayor Martin, don’t give up on this as you are doing the right thing, trying to get pesticide ban enforced. [ ?!?! ]

TO SUGARPEI — We have NO objection to YOUR choice of life-style, which, in this case, is a clear preference to live in an environment that looks like a garbage dump, just like Ontario. However, we DO object to the imposition of YOUR choice on the majority of the community that DOES NOT want to live in this manner. The reckless and arbitrary imposition of Ontario’s pesticide-hating prohibition was not in the best interest of health and environment. And, sadly, Ontario’s prohibition left a trail of economic carnage and garbage dump green spaces. There is no dispute that Ontario’s prohibition was 100 per cent politically-based and 0 per cent science-based. It is a recognized fact that prohibition is unnecessary since pest control products are Health-Canada-approved, federally-legal, scientifically-safe, practically-non-toxic, and cause no harm. NO ONE WANTS TO LIVE IN #@!!% DANGEROUS AND PEST-INFESTED URBAN LANDSCAPES THAT LOOK LIKE GARBAGE DUMPS http://wp.me/P1jq40-44g http://wp.me/p1jq40-7C4 PESTICIDE BANS HAVE NEVER MADE OUR GREEN SPACES LOOK SO #@!!% UGLY ! http://wp.me/P1jq40-4z3
Educational component ? Give me a break. This issue has been around long enough. The Precautionary Principle adopted by the Supreme Court in 2001 states that when there is an element of doubt about the safety of pesticides, legislative bodies should err on the side of safety to protect its citizens. That said, at least there’s some hope on the horizon, but it’s too bad that people in Summerside will be exposed to these toxic chemicals for yet another year. [ ?!?! ]
Norah G Fon
TO ROG — The Supreme Court NEVER made such a statement ! Moreover, the sacred so-called precautionary principle is also known as the do-nothing principle. Those that do nothing need not worry about ever taking a risk or ever making a mistake. The precautionary principle was intended for use where science DOES NOT EXIST. Unfortunately, the precautionary principle is MIS-USED TO SERVE THE AMBITIONS of Environmental & Anti-Pesticide Fanatics such as yourself. http://wp.me/P1jq40-2qM
Mayor Bill Martin was disappointed. A big part of his election campaign was getting some kind of ban through. Well Sir, if this is true, may I suggest your staff and all the union staff driving around – the long way – all day, too look about ( especially the one in passenger seat ) take notice when a sign goes up, then check if persons, within city limits was notified further than the immediate block they sprayed in !
Good move as it’s a provincial issue and trying to enforce it when simple laws are not being enforced is a no brainer. 99% of pesticides are used by farmers which are located within city boundaries so unless you touch that “sacred cow“, leave home-owners alone …. great move !!!!

Summerside Choosing Education Instead Of Pesticide Ban
November 17th, 2015
City Of Summerside, Province Of Prince Edward Island ( PEI )
Selected And Adapted Excerpts
[ Pesticide-Hating Councillor ] Gordie Whitlock’s resolution calling for a city-wide prohibition on the use cosmetic pesticides as of March 1, 2016, was defeated Monday night. [ November 16th, 2015 ]
At least a year before potential prohibition of [ so-called ] cosmetic pesticides would be passed by Summerside council
It will be at least a year before a potential by-law banning the use of cosmetic pesticides is passed by Summerside city council.
Council voted down a resolution by [ Pesticide-Hating Councillor ] Gordie Whitlock, which, if adopted, would have imposed as of March 1, 2016, a city-wide cosmetic pesticide prohibition.
Instead, council passed a resolution, introduced mere minutes after the vote, by Councillor Brian McFeely, which would see the development of a public education campaign and, later, a draft by-law that prohibits the use of [ so-called ] cosmetic pesticides.
That by-law, if passed, would not be enacted until March 2017.
“It is a democracy and the majority of the folks didn’t want to have an immediate [ anti-pesticide ] ban. I think it is a mistake, but that’s only my opinion,” [ Pesticide-Hating Councillor ] Whitlock said after the meeting. “What essentially we have decided is that we are going to allow pesticide companies to continue to put poison on lawns in Summerside for another full year.” [ ?!?! ]
“I just pray that we don’t regret that decision.” [ ?!?! ]
[ BACKGROUND INFORMATION ― Pest control products are scientifically safe and cause no harm. Anti-pesticide prohibition is unnecessary because Health Canada already registers these substances for use in Canada. Indisputable and conclusive scientific research shows that, as reported through Health Canada’s vast toxicology database, no harm will occur when pest control products are used according to label directions. Pest control products are one of the most stringently regulated products. The risk assessment of pest control products used in the urban landscape indicates that they are practically-non-toxic. The toxicity of these products is not very high when compared to table salt. There is not a single legitimate health expert who demands anti-pesticide prohibition. ]
[ Pesticide-Hating Councillors ] Whitlock and Brent Gallant cast the only votes against McFeely’s motion and they were the only supporters of the resolution for city-wide [ anti-pesticide ] prohibition by March 2016.
Under McFeely’s resolution, the education component would take about a year with the hope that an [ anti-pesticide ] by-law is presented to council, passed and in effect by March 2017.
The consensus during the hour-long, sometimes heated debate on the original resolution was that a cosmetic pesticide prohibition was needed — and supported around the table — but many councillors felt a properly researched by-law should be drafted by city staff and presented to council for approval.
There were also concerns raised about enforcement and the province’s role in a prohibition.
“We need to transition into these things and spend some time educating the public on what the alternatives [ ?!?! ] are and having them understand that there is a policy coming forth that perhaps all of us, me included, need to change some of our approaches to dealing with managing our lawns,” said McFeely.
[ BACKGROUND INFORMATION ― There are NO alternatives that work. Prohibition is somehow validated by pesticide-hating fanatics who merely concoct myths against conventional products. http://wp.me/p1jq40-3jm When it comes to controlling pests, the use of safe and effective conventional pest control products should be a no-brainer. Anti-pesticide prohibition leads to the catastrophic problems of weed invasion and insect infestation. It is impossible for professionals, and even home-owners, to protect their properties by using so-called green alternative pesticides and practices. http://wp.me/p1jq40-24g There are no viable, efficacious, economical, or low-risk alternatives to replace conventional pest control products. Green alternative pesticides are bogus and dismal failures ― they do not work and they are not innovative products. http://wp.me/p1jq40-24g By definition, alternatives are inferior, which is why they did NOT win the market-place originally. http://wp.me/p1jq40-5r8 Overall, green alternative pesticides are ineffective, inadequate, inferior, high-risk, more toxic, and stunningly expensive ! In many cases, green alternative pesticides are questionably higher in toxicity, and pose higher environmental risks. Green alternative pesticides and even organic fertilizers often contain living pathogenic organisms, fermented materials, or metals that may be deemed unsafe for children, adults, and the environment. Conventional pest control products are absolutely necessary. Fortunately, conventional pest control products are safe, effective, economical, and low-risk. ]
“We need some time to understand what’s included in the policy and what’s excluded from the policy. I don’t think it is simple as adopting someone else’s policy and thinking that it is going to work for us.”
Gallant proposed an amendment to Whitlock’s resolution that recommended council adopt a bylaw similar to that adopted by Stratford earlier this year. He also suggested the public be given a reprieve on tickets during the by-law’s first year.
“We have to start this along somewhere,” said Gallant.
The suggestion didn’t sit well with several councillors, including McFeely, and the proposed amendment was voted down 6-2.
“We are our own community and we should take the time to develop our own policy in that regards,” he said after the meeting. “There is no bylaw in front of us to even consider and here we are in the second half of November. Developing policy takes time. We have January, February, March.”
“I had absolutely no issue with the intent of the original motion at all. My issue was with the timing of it.”
Whitlock said cosmetic pesticides are “poison” and delaying a ban could be deadly. [ ?!?! ]
“Kids don’t read signs. Dogs and cats don’t read signs. They run across lawns that have been sprayed and it is dangerous. It is simple as that.” [ ?!?! ]
[ BACKGROUND INFORMATION ― THE REAL DANGER TO CHILDREN ! Any form of prohibition actually harms children and represents a danger to children ! CHILDREN ARE SAFER WITH PESTICIDES ! Because of prohibition, children are forced to play in #@!!% dangerous and pest-infested garbage dumps ! http://wp.me/P1jq40-44g http://wp.me/P1jq40-4z3 http://wp.me/p1jq40-7C4 In essence, children are at risk from dangerous playing surfaces which are created by #@!!% pesticide bans ! For example, in Hamilton, Ontario, children cannot play on the grass because of the proliferation of weeds. http://tinyurl.com/qh5e7ve In jurisdictions like Wallingford, Connecticut, there is a fear of litigation with pesticide-free playing surfaces. Clovers and dandelions have been attracting bees … what if children get stung and what if they are allergic ? http://tinyurl.com/o6tx843 Clover attracts bees that can harm children and kill people. Clover attracts killer bees. For people who are allergic to bee stings, a sting may trigger a dangerous anaphylactic reaction that is potentially deadly. Additionally, honey bee stings will release pheromones that prompt other nearby bees to attack. NO ONE wants this #@!!% dangerous ban nonsense that places children at risk ! SAYING YES TO PESTICIDES WILL KEEP OUR CHILDREN SAFE AND WILL PROTECT THE URBAN ENVIRONMENT ! ]

We are living in the 9|11 Era of Anti Pesticide & Environmental Terrorism where at least ONE SUBVERSIVE ACT OF TERRORISM is perpetrated EVERY SINGLE DAY by LUNATIC-TERRORISTS.
A LUNATIC is a person whose actions and manner are marked by extreme recklessness.
The RECKLESS ACTS OF SUBVERSION by these LUNATIC-TERRORISTS has led to the ARBITRARY IMPOSITION of Anti-Pesticide PROHIBITION in several jurisdictions throughout North America.
The result was CATASTROPHIC CARNAGE !
Because of LUNATIC-TERRORISTS, provinces like Ontario now have a TRAIL OF ECONOMIC DESTRUCTION WITH HUNDREDS OF SMALL BUSINESSES DESTROYED and THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE OUT OF WORK, a MORE DANGEROUS OUTDOOR ENVIRONMENT, and a BLACK MARKET IN PESTICIDES.
Only TRUE LUNATICS would wish to create a TRAIL OF ECONOMIC DESTRUCTION WITH HUNDREDS OF SMALL BUSINESSES DESTROYED and THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE OUT OF WORK.
Because of LUNATIC-TERRORISTS, we are living in the DARK AGE OF ANTI PESTICIDE TERRORISM where sound science is trumped by FAKE SCIENTISTS, JUNK SCIENCE and UNVERIFIABLE SECRET EVIDENCE through FABRICATION, INNUENDO, and INTERNET RUMOR ― scientific research PROVES that pest control products will CAUSE NO HARM and can be USED SAFELY.
